Actor David Arquette Wins The WCW World Heavyweight Title.
In the dying days of WCW a lot of unfortunate booking decisions were made, but none of them more damaging perhaps than when they decided to make Actor David Arquette their world champion.
In 2000 WCW produced a movie called “Ready To Rumble” starring David Arquette. To help promote the movie WCW brought in Arquette to appear on WCW programming. The cross over promotion started off innocently enough with Arquette confronting Eric Bischoff and his “New Blood” stable. Soon after, Arquette was actually placed into matches. On the April 24th episode of Nitro, in his first match, would be victorious against Eric Bischoff with the help of DDP and Chris Kanyon.
On the following April 27th Edition of Thunder WCW ran a tag team match with World Champion DDP and David Arquette taking on Jeff Jarret and Eric Bichoff. The stipulation was that whoever scored the winning pinfall, that man would become the World Heavyweight Champion. During the match Eric Bischoff and David Arquette had battled their way to the back while Jarret and DDP fought in the ring. Later on Eric made his return but David was nowhere to be seen. DDP’s “ex wife” Kimberlee was assigned as the guest referee of the match and was “taken out” by a kiss from DDP. Immediately after Jeff Jarret nailed DDP with the world title belt and pinned him. At the same time David Arquette had staggered back to the ring and nailed Eric Bischoff with a spear and pinned him. A new referee ran down and despite the fact that Jarret was clearly pinning DDP he slid right passed him as if he didn’t see Jarret and instead counted out Bischoff who was being pinned by Arquette. David Arqueete won the fall and to the surprise of everyone in attendance, won the World Heavyweight Championship. Fans would immediately throw cups and trash into the ring in disgust as Arquette celebrated with the title.
In Arquette's defense, he felt it was a terrible idea but it was insisted that he go along with the plan.
Arquette would only have two television appearances as champion. In the first he successfully defended the belt against Tank Abbot with the help of DDP.
Arquette would then compete in the Triple Cage match against DDP and Jeff Jarret at the May 7th Slamboree PPV. Near the end of the match Arquette turned on DDP allowing Jarret to win the belt making many wonder what the whole point of the angle was in the first place.
To make matters worse “Ready to Rumble” bombed at the box office only grossing $12,394,327 in the U.S.
There are a lot of things that contributed to the death of WCW but many consider this to be the final straw that broke the camel's back.
