Ox Baker starts a Riot and barley makes it out alive.

At an NWF show on January 31st 1974 at the Cleveland Arena, a bitter feud led to a match featuring Ladd and Johnny Powers in a “Texas Uncle” match that saw the only way to get a win is by making your opponent submit. The stipulation also said that if Ladd could struggle out of Powers figure four “Powerlock” finisher, he would be awarded 5,000 dollars.

Toward the end of the match Powers locked on his Powerlock finisher, and just as it seemed that Ladd was about to escape, Newcomer Ox Baker rushed to the ring and proceeded to give Ladd his special Heart Punch maneuver he was known for.

Ladd didn’t get up and fight back as quickly as Ox thought he would, so he proceeded to give him a few more heart punches for good measure.

The crowd saw this as Ox trying to kill Ladd, and so they proceeded to pelt the ring with trash and chairs, eventually even trying to enter the ring and stop them from further hurting Ladd.

At one point Powers and Ox realized that they were in danger of being torn apart by the crowd, some of whom started brandishing knives.

Both Powers and Ox were able to escape with their lives, however Ox needed between 6 and 21 stitches to close up an arm laceration and Powers also needed stiches for a cut on his head.

An estimated 300-400 chairs were destroyed during the riot.
